Saint Andrew, the Apostle, whose symbol is the diagonal cross (crux decussata or cross shaped as the letter X). Legend has it that he was martyred on a cross with this shape, tied and not nailed, as it was considered unworthy to die like Christ.
His feast is celebrated on November 30th.
It is possibly from the beautiful altarpiece in honor of Saint Andrew that Gaspar Frutuoso noticed in his visit to the Convent’s church in 1587. Successive repairs done on the piece over time disfigured the main subject but we can still notice the quality of the painting, expressed in the representation of the background.

Santo André, Apóstolo, que tem como símbolo a cruz em aspa (crux decussata ou cruz em forma de X). Segundo a lenda, foi martirizado numa cruz com esta forma, amarrado e não pregado, por se considerar indigno de morrer como Cristo.
A sua festa celebra-se a 30 de novembro.
Trata-se possivelmente do “Retabollo mto fermoso da invocação de Santo André” que Gaspar Frutuoso registou ter encontrado na igreja do Convento, em visita efetuada em 1587. As sucessivas limpezas a que a obra foi sujeita ao longo do tempo desfiguraram-na no assunto principal, mas podemos ainda constatar a qualidade da pintura, expressa nas representações do fundo.
