This exhibition offers visitors a "view" of women's manual arts, particularly the art of paper cutting and the handmade creation of artificial flowers. Both practices, traditionally associated with ornamentation and decorative aesthetics, find in this exhibition a space to highlight their cultural and heritage richness, also emphasizing the skill of transforming simple materials into true works of art.
Biographical Note
MARIA JOVITA NEGALHA
Lomba da Maia, 1922 – Ponta Delgada, 2017
From an early age, at school, she showed artistic and creative abilities. In Lomba da Maia, where she lived until the 1990s, when she moved to Ponta Delgada, she was the person locals turned to for the creation of numerous manual and creative works related to festive and cultural practices and experiences. Alongside her professional activities, her taste and sensitivity for beauty and nature led her to dedicate her free time, in the privacy of her home, to making artificial flowers from various materials and applications, as well as numerous paper-cutting pieces. Her works stand out for perfectionism, realism, and attention to detail, resulting from careful observation of nature, fine sensitivity, and a rigorous work methodology.
