Celebrate Culture, Creativity, and Community at the Carlos Machado Museum
Special Events for the European Night of Museums & International Museum Day – May 17 & 18
Join the Carlos Machado Museum for a captivating weekend of free events in celebration of the European Night of Museums (May 17) and International Museum Day (May 18). This special program invites the community to explore the evolving role of museums in today’s world—as spaces of connection, reflection, and transformation.
Saturday, May 17 – European Night of Museums
From 8:00 PM | Santo André Center
Experience the museum like never before with a dusk tour of the Natural History Circuit, revealing the magic of our collections as day fades into night.
Then, enjoy the powerful dance performance "MusEU and TU!" by Maria João Gouveia (Estúdio 13)—a moving exploration of the museum as a living space of identity, creation, and human connection.
Sunday, May 18 – International Museum Day
5:00 PM | Sacred Art Center (Igreja do Colégio)
Celebrate with an inspiring concert, Classics at the Museum, featuring the Ponta Delgada Sinfonietta under the direction of clarinetist and maestro Pedro Vicente Alamá.
This year’s theme: "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities"
The 2025 edition of International Museum Day encourages all of us—museums and visitors alike—to reimagine these cultural spaces as drivers of innovation, social change, and intercultural dialogue.
Since 1977, International Museum Day—founded by ICOM (International Council of Museums)—has championed museums as essential institutions for peace, cooperation, and cultural enrichment.
Launched in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture, the European Night of Museums offers an enchanting after-hours museum experience, making culture more accessible, dynamic, and surprising.
