MUSEUTALKS - Book presentation “Capelinhos – Fotobiografia de um Vulcão”

Santa Bárbara Center

November 14

6:00 p.m.

The book Capelinhos – Photobiography of a Volcano will be presented at the Santa Bárbara Centre of the Carlos Machado Museum on November 14, at 6:00 p.m. This visual and documentary work revisits, with both rigor and sensitivity, the Capelinhos eruption (1957–1958), one of the most significant geological events in Azorean history.

With over 350 photographs arranged chronologically, the book offers a visual journey through the formation, impact, and legacy of the volcano, combining historical records with updated scientific review.

Coordinated by Paulo Barcelos and Paulo Henrique Silva, the edition brings together rare images from family and institutional archives, with particular emphasis on the collections of Luís Carlos Decq Motta and the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo. The scientific review was carried out by geologist Salomé Meneses, former coordinator of the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre.

The event will feature a presentation by João Carlos Nunes, who will engage in conversation with one of the coordinators, Paulo Barcelos, as part of the MUSEUTALKS series.

This joint edition by the Associação Os Montanheiros and Letras Lavadas is a tribute to the collectors of memory, the inhabitants who witnessed the phenomenon, and the landscape that emerged from it a photobiography that resists oblivion.

Free admission.
