In the final 2025 edition of the Clássicos no Museu series, the Quarteto Quadrivium presents a programme dedicated to the music of Central Europe, the Azores and Brazil. Among the featured works is Quarteto de Cordas n.º 1, by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Composed in 1915 and revised around three decades later, this quartet marks the beginning of the Brazilian composer's engagement with one of the most traditional genres of concert music. Although shaped by European influences—namely French Impressionism and late Romanticism—the piece already reveals elements characteristic of the musical language that Villa-Lobos would later develop.
Structured in movements with titles such as Cantilena, Brincadeira and Cançoneta, the work alternates moments of lyricism, lightness and humour, incorporating melodies and rhythms associated with the popular music universe. The quartet thus functions as a space for experimentation, where erudite tradition interacts with the construction of a Brazilian musical identity.
