To mark the centenary of the death of Francisco Afonso Chaves is to pay tribute to one of the most remarkable figures in the scientific history of the Azores. Naturalist, meteorologist, geomagnetism researcher, and pioneer in the study of seismology, Afonso Chaves left a unique legacy of knowledge that brought the Azores to international scientific prominence. The Exhibition Honouring Francisco Afonso Chaves commemorates his memory and aims to provide a pathway for discovering the life, work, and exceptional contribution of a man who made science a tool for understanding and valuing the Azorean territory.
Curated by Conceição Tavares, this exhibition is part of the centenary commemorations of Francisco Afonso Chaves promoted by the Sociedade Afonso Chaves, and was developed in collaboration with the Escola Secundária Antero de Quental, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), and the Public Library and Regional Archive of Ponta Delgada.
Opening (free admission) on July 24th, at 6:00 pm, at the Núcleo de Santa Bárbara. The exhibition will be open to the public until March 2027.
