Canto da Maya

Exhibition

Santa Bárbara Center
The long-term exhibition presents the life and artistic production of one of the greatest figures of Azorean and national sculpture in the first half of the 20th century.

The CANTO DA MAYA exhibition brings together, through the museum collection, the life and artistic production of one of the greatest figures of Azorean and national sculpture in the first half of the 20th century - Canto da Maya (1890 - 1981). The Carlos Machado Museum, since 1976, has been proud to showcase his work capable of surprising our visitors.

The exhibition consists of ten thematic groups: Genesis, Cradle of Creation, Debut, Canto and the Great War (1914-1918), Canto da Maya: The International Consecration, Eros, Tanatos, The Portraits, The Monumental Work and Canto and Dance. The exhibition presents the path and artistic work of Canto da Maya in dialogue with the styles he followed, his prevailing themes and the ideals that guided his art.

It is an extended version of the 2012 exhibition, enriched by the selection of a hundred works by the artist, along with photographs, correspondence by the sculptor, illustrated postcards and personal objects that are still little known to the general public.
