On June 5th, the Carlos Machado Museum will host, for the first time in Azores, the 30th official Dead Duck Day ceremony, an international event that brings together science, humor, and environmental awareness. Subject of a Museutalks program, the event will take place at the Santo André Center, known for its natural history collection, and will begin precisely at 3:55 PM (local time).
It will feature the presence of Kees Moeliker, the Dutch biologista, former director of the Natural History Museum of Rotterdam, whose research inspired Dead Duck Day. In 1995, Moeliker documented the first scientific case of homosexual necrophilia in mallards duck (Anas platyrhynchos), marking a curious and impactful moment in the history of zoology.
Today, Dead Duck Day stands as a symbol of reflection on human impact on birds—particularly the tragedy of the billions of other birds that die each year from collisions with glass buildings and discuss solutions for this global wildlife disaster.
Come celebrate Dead Duck Day!
