Song of Color | The Spirituality in Domingos Rebêlo

Santa Bárbara Center

Carlos Machado Museum presents the exhibition “Song of Color: Spirituality in Domingos Rebêlo”. This exhibition pays tribute to a key figure in the museum’s collection and Azorean art of the 20th century, offering an interpretation of religious representations in both popular and scholarly contexts, themes extensively explored throughout the painter’s career.

The exhibition features works from the museum's collection and private collections, showcasing primarily oil paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and documents from Domingos Rebêlo’s personal archive, serving as valuable sources of insight into the exhibition’s theme.

This exhibition not only brings to light a selection of works rarely seen by the public but also reveals an artistic legacy that has largely remained hidden. It offers significant new perspectives, enriching the study and understanding of the theme and Domingos Rebêlo’s prolific creations.

Highlights of the exhibition include São Francisco abençoando a cidade de Assis (1930), Foliões do Espírito Santo - Santo Espírito, Santa Maria (1931), Promessa (1929), Procissão de São Pedro Gonçalves de Vila Franca do Campo (1948), Sexta-Feira Santa (1942), among others.

The exhibition is located in the -2 floor gallery of the Santa Bárbara Center, is curated internally, and will be open to visitors until 2025.
