Archaeology from the convent to the museum

Santa Bárbara Center

The Carlos Machado Museum came into being in the 1880s, and quickly saw its collections grow in both themes and number. The need for an appropriate space for safekeeping of collections became an urgent and recurrent need since then.

In 2020, with a new building being built, an archareological investigation of the area at the Santo André Convent, where the Museum was settled in the 1930s, revealed structures and artifacts that inform us of the nun's day-to-day life.

In the exhibit, the Museum presents the archaeological processs, the findings and asks questions regarding incorporating new objects into collections. informative tables have QR codes for further details regarding the objects shown.
