Santa Bárbara Center
The Carlos Machado Museum opened on June 8th, at 3:00 PM, in the Santa Bárbara Center, the exhibition "Adagio" by painter Tomaz Borba Vieira. The exhibition brings together his latest works created between 2019 and 2023.
The exhibition will be on display until the end of Õctober.
Biography:
Tomaz Borba Vieira was born in Ponta Delgada in 1938. An educator, painter, writer, and cultural promoter, he studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon; mural art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence; pedagogy at the University of Lisbon; and education sciences (MA) at Boston University.
He has showcased his work in individual and collective exhibitions. He taught at technical, preparatory, secondary, and higher education levels (School of Fine Arts of Lisbon and the Department of Education at the University of the Azores) and was a teacher trainer. He has given lectures and published articles on education and art, prefaced exhibitions of new artists, and presented works by some of the main Azorean artists on RTP Açores in 1989. He organized the exhibition "THE SENSES," with the collaboration of the C. Gulbenkian Foundation and the Regional Government of the Azores, at the Colégio Church in Ponta Delgada (1989). He was part of the organizing committee for the exhibition "The Window on the Azores," as a Guest Curator at the Bermuda National Gallery, Hamilton, in 1999 and "Modern Art Museum," New Bedford, in 2000. He founded the Caloura Cultural Center in 2005 and was awarded the Autonomic Recognition Insignia by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. He published "Herdar Estrelas" (novel) in 2000; "Degrau de Pedra" (short stories) in 2003, with illustrations by Luís França; "O Carcereiro da Vila" (short stories) in 2008; "Navegação Interior" (short stories) in 2013; "O Lugar da Maçã" (short stories) in 2019; "O Lado de Cá" (short stories), selected for the “Plano Regional de Leitura” in 2021; "Nariz de Santo" (short stories) in 2022, all illustrated by the author. His work is represented in the Ponta Delgada Museum (Carlos Machado Museum), Arquipélago and Angra do Heroísmo Museum, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and the collections of the Regional Government of the Azores and the European Commission.
